The European Union, its Member States and Europeans across the continent are mobilised in support of people fleeing the war in Ukraine. We are working on all fronts to support Ukraine with assistance, humanitarian aid and civil protection. This specific initiative wants to support researchers of Ukraine by providing them with an overview of all existing actions at European and national levels.

Switzerland helps people in need of protection who have fled from Ukraine by granting protection status S, the right to stay as a war refugee (further information).
New regulation from 1 November 2025 - Protection status S to remain in place, but new regulation for seven Ukrainian regions: Owing to the continuing unpredictable security situation and the ongoing Russian attacks on large parts of Ukrainian territory, the Federal Council decided on 8 October not to lift protection status S until 4 March 2027, unless there is a lasting improvement in the situation in Ukraine. From 1 November, SEM will distinguish between regions to which a return is considered reasonable or unreasonable when assessing new applications for protection status S. The new regulation will not apply to persons who already have protection status S in Switzerland or their family members who are still living in Ukraine (further information).
Ukrainians newly arriving in Switzerland should report directly to a federal asylum centre to obtain protection status S. They offer accommodation places for a short period. Registration takes place here, and registered refugees are then assigned to a canton. This canton is responsible for accommodation and other care as well as for the payment of social welfare benefits, if necessary, to cover basic daily needs in Switzerland.
RegisterMe
Persons from Ukraine seeking protection can submit their application for protection status S via the online web application RegisterMe. To submit an application, they must have been resident in Ukraine before 24 February 2022 and have already entered Switzerland.
Job offers
How can Ukrainian protection seekers finance their livelihood in Switzerland?
The Confederation facilitates social and professional integration in Switzerland. All persons with protection status S receive social assistance from the canton - and they can pursue a job (including self-employment) without a waiting period. Children can go to school.
Together with the cantons, the State Secretariat for Migration SEM will examine the needs of the persons admitted. The cantons are free to provide further integration benefits.
